Destination

California

Los Angeles is the second largest city in America after New York, and it couldn't be more different than it's north-eastern rival. Los Angeles' location under the everlasting southern California sun has always given the city a laid-back, beach attitude even amongst its most built-up, skyscraper-filled down town.

A huge sprawling city of different neighbourhoods and towns, LA boasts ultra-ritzy areas like the infamous Beverly Hills and Bel-Air, as well as funky, down-to-earth places like Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Go shopping on Melrose Space, cruise Sunset Boulevard, see the giant Hollywood sign, and pay homage to your favourite stars at Grauman's Chinese theatre.

Disneyland and Universal studios offer the best amusements parks around, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at all the TV shows and movies you know and love. And with public beaches abounding, it's always easy catch some waves. Los Angeles has it all: skyscrapers, neighbourhoods, Chinatown, barrios, restaurants and culture, and of course, celebrities and glamour galore.

Residence from 13 - 18 yrs

Loyola Marymount University

The superb campus of Loyola Marymount University is situated south of Los Angeles, on a hill overlooking the Pacific coast. This campus is the best place to start exploring California and the charms of the region. It has several sports facilities (outdoor pool, basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts and football pitches).

Students stay in double rooms in the university’s fully-equipped dormitories. Full board (3 meals per day) is provided.

Activities and Excursions

Each afternoon and evening, activities are planned for students’ enjoyment. The activities are carefully planned and organised to provide the opportunity to meet others from around the world and to use the freshly acquired English language skills from class.

  • Afternoon activities can be on-campus or around-campus, and may range from sports (i.e. soccer, basketball, swimming) to local attractions and cultural events (i.e. concerts, museums). Students will have admission to the state of the art on-campus athletic centre, but only through planned activities. An on-campus swimming pool is available to enjoy but is also subject to rules, and is only available during supervised time scheduled by the activity leaders. This is to ensure students’ safety.
  • Evening activities are generally on-campus activities and more "low-key" than the afternoon activities (i.e. movies, videos, games). However the school also plans some very fun and "high-energy" activities each week as well, for example parties, dances and concerts.
  • The excursion program  includes one full day excursion per week and three half-day excursions per week. Full day excursion usually occur on the weekends. Students visit one of the famous sites in Los Angeles or the surrounding areas. Three weekday afternoons and evenings per week, there will be sightseeing in Los Angeles. These are called "half-day" excursions, but you are really sightseeing for almost a full day! The half-day excursions will cover most of the main attractions or areas of the city. You will see a lot!

Excursions are discussed in class before each trip. Visits and excursions are discussed and prepared for during lesson time so that the students understand what they will be visiting so as to get and get the most out of them. This combination of exploring through activities and excursions is the best way to discover life in Los Angeles and to improve your English skills!

The school staff often take the students to Redondo Beach, Belmont Shores or Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. And of course they always enjoy trips to Disneyland or Universal Studios
