Language programme in Antwerp

Antwerp is an animated Belgian metropolis and home to the most important universities in Flanders. From its position overlooking the mouth of the river Scheldt, Antwerp has long dominated Northern European trade. In the 16th century, the city’s wealth attracted merchants and manufacturers from across the continent and today it boasts the second largest port in Europe. However, the old city holds plenty of charm for those who prefer a quieter outlook on Europe; many of the old buildings have been conserved, including the beautiful Gothic and renaissance façades surrounding the town market. Antwerp also boasts an animated night life, with pubs and night clubs famous worldwide.

Cosmocollege School of Dutch

The school is a small family run and very hospitable structure located on a commercial street, 15 minutes by tram to the town centre.

The school offers :

  • 5 classrooms spread over two buildings located 50 meters from each other
  • A spacious study room equiped with computers attached to a small Library with the permanent attendance of a school teacher available for help
  • A space for hot drinks and lunches equiped with a kitchenette
  • A reception desk
  • A small garden
  • Free Wi-Fi connexion

The school is a registered centre for CNaVT preparation, the official Dutch as a foreign language international exam, and FOREM Wallon Region.

Activity Programme during your stay

In July and August, supervised activities included in the programme are organised by the school on the basis of one activity per week. During the rest of the year, the teachers will advise you which visits or activities could correspond to your own centres of interest during your stay.

Examples of activities offered during the summer course:

  • Museum visits: Plantin-Moretus museum, Rubens museum, the MAS museum with its superb 360° view of the city
  • Discovery of Antwerp through themed walks
  • Leisure & relaxation at Antwerp beach (on the Escaut river banks)

All of the students taking the long term programme also prepare a dissertation to be presented at the end of their stay. The topic has to be approved by the director of studies. Students must carry out interviews with Dutch speakers and make a research documentary. This work is carried out with the help of a teacher (also during ILP time).

An extra activity is also offered one afternoon per week.

Beginners who wish to join this programme must first take four weeks of beginner lessons in order to attain the required level.

  • Individual Lessons: You can choose between 10, 15, 20 to 25 hours per week

  • Lessons for professionals : 26 mini-group lessons per week

These lessons aim to help students to better communicate in Dutch speaking work environments and give them specialised vocabulary related to specific sectors. Given the small size of the groups (maximum 6 students), each student's objectives are taken into account. For ages 21+, two weeks for levels A2 and up and three weeks for levels B1 and up.

Cosmocollege ensures a start date every month, even if there is just one student. In this case, the student will receive 15 individual lessons, combined with 4 group lessons and 5 personalised work lessons in the study room (where a teacher is always available), this is the equivalent to 30 group lessons.
