Location
Exeter, the capital city of the county of Devon, England, is situated Northeast of the city of Plymouth, some two hours from London and has a population of some 120,000 inhabitants. Exeter is known for its ancient cathedral, its city gates from the XIIth and XIVth century and its remarkable architecture. It is also a university city that attracts students from across England and the world. Its climate is generally more moderate and sunnier than the rest of England and its reputation as a safe and enjoyable city makes it one of England’s favorite destinations.
School
Our partner school in Exeter is situated in an animated, grassy neighbourhood in the city centre. Accredited by the British Council and member of the IALC, it has offered quality education to youth and adults from around the world since 1978. The Junior Centre is well-equipped with bright classrooms with whiteboards, projectors and televisions, a library, an internet room, a small kitchen and a day lounge.
Programme
This stimulating programme helps students associate learning with vacation. The educative programme encourages oral communication above all by practicing theoretical knowledge and developing self-confidence. A varied activity programme gives students the chance to practice English while having fun and discovering English culture. The activity programme is obligatory and included in the fee. A teacher always accompanies students on the activities.
Courses
- For 11 to 14 and 15 to 18 years
Courses of 20 lessons per week beginning each Monday, year-round (except during Christmas vacation). They are appropriate for students from elementary to advanced levels.
A placement test at the beginning of the course permits the faculty to divide the students into appropriate classes of 8 to 14 students. The classes cover all language competencies, but place emphasis on speaking and self-confidence to permit effective communication.
(FULL until the end of July 2012)
- For 7 to 11 years
For juniors, courses take place in the summer only and are oriented toward students having a beginner or intermediate level. The classes are small, with just 4 to 10 students. They are highly animated and generally oriented around games and practical activities. Transportation from the host family to the school is supervised by the host families.
Students of all ages receive evaluation reports to help them track their progression.
Activities
In the afternoons, students participate in a programme of activities organised by the school and supervised by its staff. Each week, there is generally an afternoon excursion, two afternoons of athletic activities, two afternoons of discovery, two evening outings and one Saturday excursion.
Example activities: sport - cycling, squash, swimming, tennis, canoeing, ice-skating, bowling; excursions - Dartmoor National Park, Dart Valley, Plymouth, Bristol, Bath, London; Exeter Festival - music, dance, theatre (usually the first 2 weeks of July)
Accommodation
Accommodation is in a host family. Host families never host two students with the same mother tongue. We carefully select families based on the comfort and supervision that they can provide to the participants and their desire to host students and share their culture. The majority of our families are well known to the school’s staff, who communicate regularly with them. The families are on average about 30 minutes from the school by bus.
