Seaside resort in the South of England
Bournemouth is without question one of the finest student towns on England’s southern coast. Its beauty and accommodating amenities have helped to make it an important centre of tourism, education and business. Public transportation is very well-organised, offering an excellent network of buses and trains extending throughout Britain and to many parts of Europe. London is only 100 minutes by train.
Bournemouth hosts numerous events during the year, including powerboat races, vintage car shows, international tennis championships and windsurfing competitions. During the summer, there are weekly firework displays from the pier, laser light shows, the Musicmakers festival and the unique Flowers by Candlelight festival, where the people of Bournemouth gather to light 15,000 candles in the Central Gardens.
Bournemouth is a safe and inviting place for young people. The beaches and the pedestrian zones offer youth the opportunity to enjoy their holidays. Our partner schools’ locations in residential neighbourhoods assure safe and easy transportation between host families and classes.
School
The Westbourne Academy is situated in a desirable location, just 1 kilometer from the sandy beaches of Bournemouth and only 500 meters from the diverse and stylish shopping centre of Westbourne. In this suburban neighbourhood you will find banks, a post office, international restaurants, classic English pubs and a variety of retail outlets to satisfy every taste. Downtown Bournemouth is 1.5 kilometers to the east and Poole 3 kilometers to the west. The school is a recognized preparation centre for the Cambridge Exams, it is a member of "English in Britain" (Association of Recognized Language Schools) and is recognized by the British Council. The school therefore benefits from state funding, ensuring the quality of the programme. The Westbourne Academy offers English courses of 20 or 40 lessons per week (one lesson is 40 minutes long).
Course
English & Golf Programme
English and Golf consists of English lessons at Westbourne Academy and Golf lessons at the renowned Parkstone Golf Club. The course content is as follows:
- English lessons: 20 lessons of 40 minutes per week
Five half days of English lessons (4 lessons of 40 minutes per day) for all levels, Monday to Friday. - Golf Lessons:
1 session = 1 hour of instruction and monitored practice
Lessons are designed to improve all aspects of the golfer’s game and are given by a PGA professional. The professional will provide golf clubs and balls for use during lessons and practice. Golf lessons can be in groups of two or more or on an individual basis. The students can play rounds of golf once they reach an appropriate level or if they hold a handicap certificate.
Optional supplements include a video swing analysis and a swing machine analysis. Please note that there is a dress code during the golf lessons, which means no jeans, shorts or collarless shirts. Parkstone Golf Club has a fully stocked Pro-shop where the professional can advise the golfers on the purchase of golf equipment.
Accommodation
Accommodation in a host family is provided with this programme. The families generally live in the residential areas of Westbourne or Parkstone and are either a short walk from the school or near a direct bus line to the centre of town and the school. Host families are selected for their warmth as well as their experience in hosting foreigners. Except during the high season (about June-August), accommodation is in a private room unless participants specifically request to share.
Accommodation includes half-board (breakfast and a hot evening meal) Monday to Friday, with the addition of sack lunches on Saturday and Sunday. Hot and cold meals are available in the school restaurant during the week.
