English in Liverpool

School

Destination

Liverpool has something for everyone. This vibrant and cultural city was chosen as the European capital of culture in 2008: after London, it has the most theatres, museums, and art galleries in England. Liverpool is also, of course, known for the being the global Pop music capital, being home to the Beatles. Several local attractions retell the rise and history of that monumentally famous band, making the city an important tourist destination.

For football fans, a discussion of Liverpool can't include mention of its two main clubs, Everton and Liverpool, which often play well throughout Britain and Europe.

Student life is a key component of the city of Liverpool. Restaurants, bars, clubs - Liverpool has a nationally renowned nightlife. One thing's for certain: there will be enough things to do outside of class.

School

Our partner school is situated in the centre of town and is accredited by the British Council and labeled "Quality English" (a label which is earned only by the best language schools in the world) and "English UK". Students are able to make use of their library, IT room, and common room (complete with drinks machines). WiFi is available throughout the school.

The school values art highly and boasts some impressive works of photography. You can't help but be surprised by the surrounding environment of the school - it's as if you're studying in an art gallery.

Activities

Our partner school offers a full activity programme for its students: a tour of the town, visit Liverpool's main tourist sites, a night at the pub, a trip on a boat, a day spent in York...

Students can sign up at the school, with some activities for a small fee.

Courses

All levels are accepted. Tests are taken throughout your programme to evaluate your progress. There's a maximum of 15 students per class in the summer, between 4 and 10 the rest of the year.

We offer the following programmes:

  • General English
The general English courses allow you to improve your English every day. While the content of the course will vary with ability, each lesson covers grammar, speaking and pronunciation, and writing and listening. We offer two levels of intensity:

    • Standard course: 15 lessons per week
Classes are in the mornings, Monday to Friday.

    • Intensive course: 21 lessons per week
Classes take place every morning, Monday to Friday, and the afternoon, Monday to Thursday.

  • Business English: 30 lessons per week
These classes aim to help students communicate better in the business world by giving them the specialised vocabulary for relevant domains. In small groups, participants work on listening, reading, vocabulary, discussions, and will have to look at case studies.

This course lasts 3 weeks. Students must already have an intermediate level in English.

  • IELTS preparation
This programme is available to students with an intermediate level in English and includes 6 lessons per week, to be combined with the General English course. It covers specific material preparing students for the IELTS (International Language Testing System) exam, a requirement for entry into most British universities (as well as many in the USA, Australia, and other English-speaking countries).

  • Cambridge exam (FCE & CAE) preparation
This programme consists of 15 lessons per week dedicated to preparing for one of these exams. Available for 4, 8, or 12 weeks.
Classes focus on the different aspects of the exam: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Accommodation

We can offer you three types of accommodation:

  • Host family

Living with an English host family will help you discover Liverpool and practice your English with the local people, allowing for rapid progression.

Our hosts are carefully chosen and we have excellent relationships with them. They offer single rooms with a shared bathroom. Half board is provided. The family provides bedlinen but you will have to bring your own towels.

Families are situated on average 20 minutes from the school (up to 45 minutes).

  • Apartment (all year, subject to availability)

We also offer accommodation in an apartment shared with other students.

You'll have the choice between single or double rooms, and you'll share the kitchen and bathroom with your flatmates.

Our apartments are student areas, near shops, restaurants, and bars.

Communal areas are cleaned once a week. A WiFi connection is available.

Apartments are situated on average 20 minutes from the school (up to 45 minutes).

  • Student residence (only in July and August)

For students in need of a bit more independence, we offer accommodation in a student residence, in a single en suite room.

You'll share a common room with a TV, a fully equipped kitchen, and a laundrette (3£ per machine) with the other international students.

The residence is about 15 minutes' walk from the school.
