Program
Destination
Los Angeles is known for its show business. You can’t help but associate it with glitz and glamor. The "City of Angels" continues to embody the American dream. Los Angeles is overall sunny and has a temperate climate, beautiful beaches, the world’s most famous film industry and first-class lifestyle. It is also a city full of contrasts and supports a large artistic scene, as you will notice by the many museums in the city.
School
Marymount College is located just south of downtown Los Angeles, and has a tradition of serving students for over 75 years. It has a beautiful view on the Pacific Ocean. The picturesque and hilly campus is surrounded by the community of Rancho Palos Verdes and perched above the beautiful California coastline. Fans of The O.C. might recognize Long Beach as being "Newport Beach" from the television series' scenes.
A library and information technology lab are available to the students.
Courses
The school offers several courses in English as you will see below. Students will be placed in classes of 15 students or less, so teachers will have room for individual attention. Weekly English tests and individualized progress reports are run every four weeks. A certificate of completion upon successful graduation from each level is delivered, along with personalized counselling and academic assistance. All levels are accepted, from beginner to advanced.
- Semi-Intensive course
This programme includes 18 lessons per week (15 hours) in the English skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. For students who prefer to combine their studies with plenty of time for sightseeing and relaxation, our semi-intensive programme offers fundamental English skills and free time to enjoy the many attractions near the school campus.
- Intensive course
This programme includes 24 lessons each week (20 hours). The programme focuses especially on speaking. Students practice speaking skills frequently in class, receiving regular guidance and correction from their instructor.
- Super Intensive course
This comprehensive programme is designed to maximize student progress with even more instruction, 30 lessons per week (25 hours). It is an ideal option for those who wish to improve their skills quickly. - TOEFL exam preparation (36 lessons)
This programme covers general English and trains you specifically for the TOEFL exam.
If you are interested in preparing for an internationally recognised English exam, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), this programme will help you achieve your goals. It focuses on vocabulary and the three main aspects of the TOEFL: speaking, grammar, and writing. Advanced level required.
Activities
Students have access to numerous free activities and specially priced excursions. Those include the original Disney theme park which is the home to Space Mountain and the Indiana Jones Adventure, a tour of Hollywood, Universal Studios, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Venice beach, the beautiful seaside resort of Santa Barbara, Raging Waters, extreme roller coasters, etc.
Accommodation
We offer accommodation with host families or in student residence.
- Host Family
Stay with a carefully selected American host family to increase your understanding of English and American culture. Many of our students make American friends with whom they keep in touch with long after their English programme is over.
Host Families are carefully chosen from safe and attractive neighbourhoods. Our housing staff interviews each family to make sure that the family provides a clean, welcoming home for students. Many of our families have hosted for years and have welcomed students from many countries. They understand the special needs of international students and our housing staff is available for your assistance if questions arise during your stay.
The accommodation includes half board and a shared room.
- Residence
Apartments with international roommates are available for students who prefer an independent lifestyle. Each resident will share a bedroom with one other person. All apartments are fully furnished. Students will use self catering facilities to cook their own meals.
