Destination
Malta is made up of a group of islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. The island of Gozo is home to the Ggantija temple, the world’s oldest freestanding structure. Because of its strategic location, Malta has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Arabs, Romans, the Knights of St. John, the French and the British, all of whom have left their mark on the islands.
Malta became a British colony in 1814 and went on to achieve independence in 1964. Mediterranean culture is dominant in Malta, but 150 years of British rule left their mark. English is still an official language, the Maltese drive on the left side of the road and enjoy a nice English breakfast. The most popular daily newspaper is the Malta Times which is published in English.
Malta has something for everyone: Mediterranean climate, crystal-clear waters, an abundance of history, pretty villages, colorful feasts and celebrations. Malta also offers wonderful cafes and restaurants, a lively nightlife, a wide range of shops and, of course, English classes.
School
Our partner school in Malta is a leading English language school with more than 8,000 students from many different nationalities attending each year - guaranteeing the ideal international language learning environment. In the absence of a recognised label such as the British Council in England, we have instead established a partnership with a FELTOM school, i.e. a member of the " Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations of Malta" and recognised by the Ministry of Education.
The school offers a vibrant year-round centre for adults (18+) in Sliema and a popular teenager programme (13 to 17 yrs) just 10 minutes away, close to Sliema Harbour. Located just 3 miles from the historical capital of Valletta and half an hour drive from the international airport, Sliema is a cosmopolitan seaside resort. The school is located close to the promenade, so why not join the locals as they enjoy the daily evening stroll around the bay to lively St Julian’s and its multitude of restaurants, bars, roadside cafes and discos!
Courses
A placement test will be given upon arrival to match students with their appropriate level (from beginner to advanced). Each class has a maximum of 12 students. Our school in Malta proposes two types of programme:
- Standard English: 20 lessons of 45 minutes per week
This programme leaves participants plenty of time to enjoy their holiday on this beautiful island.
- Intensive English: 30 lessons of 45 minutes per week
This programme is ideal for those who wish to dedicate more time to improving their English. Extra class time will help the development of vocabulary and provide practice in oral and written language skills.
Activities
The school offers adult participants a programme of social activities and excursions. These activities are presented during orientation, on the first Monday, and are outlined in the guide distributed on arrival. Students can register for activities at the school during breaks and in the afternoon. These activities take place in the afternoon, evening, on weekdays and weekends.
Some examples of activities are cruises around the ports of Valletta, visit to the "Three Cities" by bus, Paradise Sandy Beach, wine tasting, football, tour of Valette, jeep safari to more remote parts of the island, salsa classes, excursions to Gozo, night on the town, horseback riding, scuba diving, etc ...
Accommodation
We offer two primary options for accommodation during this programme, host family and student residence.
- Host Family
Our carefully selected host families are all native English speakers who greet our students warmly and provide them with the best possible opportunity to practice their English in a real-world environment. Host families provide two meals a day (half-board).
The majority of our families live in Silema/St. Julians/Swieqi, others live in the neighbouring villages of San Gwann, Msida, Ta/Xbiex, Naxxar, Lija, Balzan, and Attard.
Typically you will be housed in a double (sometimes triple) room, but a single room can be booked (for an additional fee in busier seasons), subject to availability.
NB: Single rooms in host families are FULL for June and July.
- Student Residence
Alternatively, students can opt to stay in one of our residences. We cannot guarantee one residence in particular, but two people who book at the same time will always be able to room together in the same residence. This option does not include any meals.
- Alborada apartments, which are within 10 minutes walking distance from the language centre for adults in Malta, have proved to be very popular with our students. The residence has an excellent location and offers studio apartments equipped with an ensuite bathroom and a kitchenette.
- Days Inn residence, which offers en suite rooms shared between 2 people, with a kitchenette and air-conditioning. The reception is open 24 hours and there is a café with internet access, a restaurant, and a bar. There is also a swimming pool on the roof.
Students can choose to stay in a sharing studio apartment of a maximum of 2 or 3 students, or a single studio apartment. They can rent a TV for €5 per week and also have Wi-Fi access for a minimal fee of €2 per week.
