This programme is open to motivated students aged 13-17 who wish to study for 1 semester to 1 full academic year in China, while sharing the life of a host family.
Our program includes a 4-week Mandarin course at the start of the stay. A good command of Mandarin is not required to enrol, while a good level of English is mandatory.
Vast country with an age-old culture, China is nowadays the first economical power in the world. Being able to speak Mandarin and understanding Chinese culture are undeniable assets which will open many doors on the labour market.
You will discover a completely different world to ours, so that when it comes to food, culture, habits and customs you'll sometimes have the feeling to live on a different planet.
You will of course have the opportunity to discover Beijing, but also the Great Wall as well as the famous Terracotta Army near the city of Xi'an during excursions organized by our partner.
You will study with Chinese and foreign students who are preparing for an international curriculum at university. That's the reason why some lessons are being taught in Mandarin and others in English.
Founded in 1934 , the school is considered the best High School in Beijing. It is the only one to have an international department and to prepare its students to pursue university training abroad once they graduate from secondary school. Several lessons are being taught according to the American Programme Advanced Placement; Maths and Science lessons are bilingual in English and Chinese. Literature, History and Geography are taught in Mandarin.
The school hosts 1200 students and offers excellent sport facilities such as a football pitch, a running track, a swimming pool, a gym and a canteen that serves Chinese and international dishes.
It is located 15 minutes on foot from a subway station and about 40 minutes from the city centre.
Our programme includes a 4-week Mandarin course in a language school prior to the start of the academic year. Then, if necessary, you will be able to keep on attending private lessons during the weekends in order to improve your level quicker.
Chinese education system
The Chinese education system is similar to the one encountered in Western European countries. Schooling is mandatory from 6 to 15 years of age. After 6 years of primary school, students enter junior and senior secondary schools, each for 3 years.
The programme usually includes lessons of Chinese, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English (other languages such as Russian, Korean or Japanese are being taught in some regions), History, Geography, Political Sciences, Sciences, Music, Arts, Technology, Physical Education and Citizenship Education.
Your host family is the defining feature of your study abroad experience, helping you become fully accustomed to Chinese culture and feel part of the local community.
Our partner organization's volunteer host families are carefully screened and regularly inspected. Families take an active interest in choosing a student to host and sharing their homes, lives and culture with their guests.
You will be accommodated with a Chinese family, in a shared room* with the child of the family, and full board. Families cook a typical homemade cuisine.
During the week, lunch is served at the school canteen (Chinese and international dishes).
Families live in modern flats, in buildings recently built, equipped with WiFi and air conditioning.
They live maximum 45 minutes away from your school.
*It is possible to stay in a single room (at an extra cost).
The local coordinator
The local coordinator is an experienced staff member who knows the host families and is in regular contact with the students and their host parents throughout the programme. They regularly organize meetings to ensure that your experience is going smoothly, both with your host family and at school. Your local coordinator is on hand to lend assistance in case of any issues and should be your first point of contact on the ground.
