This program is available to motivated students aged 14 to 18 who wish to spend one semester or one year in a Canadian high school (secondary education) and share the daily life of a Canadian host family. Our partner operates with a network of schools in the district of Winnipeg, capital city of Manitoba, and offers a diverse curriculum of courses adapted to the levels of participants. Our students enjoy full access to all of the school's sports, clubs and associations.
Canada is the second largest country in the world by surface area and one of the world's geographical miracles. It stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean and shares its borders with Alaska in the north-east and the US to the south. This country is home to almost every climate on earth, from the wind-swept tundra of the North Territories to the temperate rain forests and mountains of British Columbia. Canada is home to the world’s largest freshwater lakes and large amounts of pine forests.
Our partner schools are situated in Winnipeg in the central province of Manitoba, the 8th largest city in Canada (800,000 inhabitants). The region is known for its lakes, its numerous cultural activities (festivals, theatres, operas) and its geography: the region does not have many mountains, which allows cross-country skiers to practice their sport.
Winnipeg is a fantastic choice of destination for foreign students. It lets young people discover the life of a real Canadian city, with a much lower living costs than in Vancouver or Toronto. The quality of teaching is just as excellent as elsewhere in the country.
The climate is typically Canadian: the summers are hot (up to 28°C), and the winters are dry and cold, with the temperature able to drop as low as -28°C. But the city is equipped for low temperatures.
Students can choose around 4 to 5 subjects, out of those offered by a particular school (each school has its own list). They can also follow a course of English as a Second Language, to target any weaknesses they may have. Assistants are there to help with organising their work and planning their academic year.
Here is a preview of the different subjects offered by our schools: Maths, Physics, English literature, Sociology, Psychology, Earth sciences, Business, Management, Climatology, Graphic communication, Marine biology, Space technology...
It's a unique opportunity to discover new subjects, or to perfect your skills in your preferred area. Students are free to choose courses they are interested in.
It is also possible for students in their final year to obtain an end-of-studies diploma under certain conditions (strict courses, for example). Contact us for more information.
If your level of English is not quite high enough to be able to follow academic classes as soon as you arrive, you will be invited to participate in English language classes in addition to, or instead of your academic classes.
Canadian children study for a minimum of 12 years (Primary school + Secondary school). This program offers international students the chance to study at a local high school. Junior high school covers the first 3 years of secondary school (7 to 9th grade), while these high schools cover the last four years of secondary studies - grades 9 - 12.
The Canadian academic year is divided into three terms. As an international student, you can enrol in a class for three months, one semester (in September or February) or a full academic year .
In many Canadian schools, the choice of subjects is large: psychology, sociology, literature, drama, pottery, journalism, architecture, speech, media, IT... it's a unique chance to discover new subjects, or to progress in an area you already know. Some classes last just one semester, therefore students will have the chance to change subjects part way throughout the year.
Your choice will also be important for cultural, sportive, and social activities: football, baseball, tennis, swimming, athletics, basketball, volleyball, charity club, student council, band, cheer-leading, debating club, speech club, year book committee... This school will be a unique chance to explore unknown subjects and activities. But it will also be the dream opportunity to dive into Canadian life and get to know local people of your age.
The district of Winnipeg, with whom we have a partnership, is composed of 42 public primary and secondary schools. Participants will be enroled in one of the district's 5 English-speaking High Schools. They are located in the North of the city, on the banks of the beautiful Red River.
These schools accept between 700 and 1200 students, less than 5% being international. This means participants will be immediately plunged in a total English-speaking environment, which will make language progress faster and sustainable.
All schools are equipped with media centre, fitness room, sports gym, science labs and computer rooms. All students have a personalized email address as well as limitless WiFi connection. Swimming pools are also located a short distance from the schools. These are open to students during their free time after classes, during the evenings or the weekends.
All schools own their soccer, cross-country, hockey, curling, volleyball, basketball, athletics and American football teams. Other activities such as acting, singing in a choir, joining a jazz band, cheerleading, art club, school's paper, eloquence and debating club and many more are also available.
Your host family is the defining feature of your study abroad experience, helping you become fully accustomed to the culture and feel part of the local community.
Canadians are famous for their hospitality, tolerance and openness.
Our partner organization's host families are carefully screened and regularly inspected. Families take an active interest in choosing a student to host and sharing their homes, lives and culture with their guests.
The local coordinator is an experienced member of staff who knows the host families and is in regular contact with the students and their host parents throughout the duration of the programme. They regularly organise meetings to ensure that your experience is going smoothly, both with your host family and at school. Your local coordinator is on hand to lend assistance in case any should arise, and are your first point of contact on the ground.
Our partner organisation's local coordinators are all experienced and fully qualified to assist international students on the ground, offering support and assistance quickly and efficiently should any issues present themselves.
An emergency number will be given to you to use in case of any emergencies.
