Internship in New Zealand

Program

Overview

New Zealand is an exciting destination to gain practical experience and develop your professional skills while improving your English. An excellent network of business connections allows us to place you in a company and position that matches your professional goals.

Our partner organisation offers a high quality programme to international students. Our programme ensures that you are supported at every step of the internship process. We provide professional guidance and act as a liaison between the host organisation/company and candidate.

Destination

This incredibly beautiful country consists of two islands: The North Island and South Island. Both islands offer stunning natural wonders that will leave a deep impression on you. Many international visitors enjoy the wide range of extreme sports on offer, like Bungee Jumping and Zorbing.

Auckland is the largest city of New Zealand with over 1.4 million residents. It’s just a few hours drive from the best surf spots in the country and lots of astonishing natural geysers. It’s also a fantastic place for your internship. The business climate is modern with an international outlook. The famous Kiwi friendliness and wonderful weather will make you forget about home very quickly.

New Zealand is a developed first world country that ranks highly in many international comparisons, particularly education, economic freedom, and lack of corruption. Auckland consistently ranks among the best cities in the world for standard of living.

Details

Conditions

Participants must be able to communicate well in English (enough for a work environment). The exact demand depends on the type of internship. For some requests, we may ask students to take a short online English assessment.

Interested in brushing up on your English beforehand? Take a look at our English schools in New Zealand.

The length of the internship must be 12 weeks minimum.

In general these internships are unpaid. The company may in certain cases reimburse travel expenses but that is not a general rule. For the most part, you should not be looking to earn money, but rather earn intellectual experience!

Domains

New Zealand is a country full of opportunities, but it is not yet entirely familiar with the concept of internships. Our partner organisation is entering into agreements with various enterprises who would potentially be interested in taking on interns, and explaining to them the concept of an internship and to hammer out terms.

An internship is possible in one of a wide range of sectors of up to 6 months:

  • Marketing companies (market research)
  • Hotels (3, 4, and 5 stars)
  • Tourism companies (travel and recreation)
  • Information technology corporations
  • Governmental organisations (mainly big organisations)
  • Agriculture institutions
  • Small, medium, and large-sized businesses

Types of internships:

  • Marketing & Communications
  • Hospitality, tourism, sport and recreation
  • Education
  • Computer science and IT
  • Agriculture
  • Business and law
  • Science and environmental
  • Art film and broadcasting

Support

We also provide support settling in:

Orientation presentation and assistance; Auckland city tour; New Zealand mobile phone card; organised social activities; assistance finding good long-term accommodation and opening a bank account; personal support, advice and evaluations; luggage storage; travel and car rental discounts in New Zealand.

A personal introduction at the company by one of our partner organisation’s members of staff can be arranged if the internship is in Auckland. Please see the price table for this option.

Good to know:

Insurance: You should be covered by insurance from the moment of leaving your home country. If you are not, you can request to be covered by our own insurance - simply indicate this when you enrol.

Vaccinations: There are no particular vaccinations to be taken before coming to New Zealand. However, if you intend to make the most of your trip to that part of the world by visiting other countries (Fiji, Asia, Polynesia...) you may have to have specific injections or preventative medicines against the rarer diseases. Contact your doctor for more information.

Driving license: If you already have a driving license, you can apply for an international license before leaving, which would not only allow you to drive in New Zealand but would also avoid the long and tiresome processes in New Zealand itself.

Public transport: New Zealand is very well equipped in terms of public transport. You will able to get around by bus, or you can rent a car fairly cheaply.

Accommodation

It is entirely possibly to arrange accommodation when you're there, whether just for the first few weeks or for the entire length of the internship.

Our partner offers host family accommodation, student residential housing, or even in a villa.

The accommodation and pricing depends on your internship destination; we can give you further information upon request.

Practical Info

Process

After filling in our online enrolment form, indicating the correct dates and length you would like the internship to be for, you will be invited to pay an initial deposit of €250. At this time we will also ask you to send the following:

  • Your CV
  • A covering letter for your intended position/field
  • An indication of your level of English
  • A personal photo
  • A description of your requested specifications for an internship, with as much detail as possible
  • Type of company
  • Area of work experience

Once we have received this information, we will send it over to our partner organisation in Auckland, where they will begin to match you to a company and field. After this point, if you decide to cancel your application for an internship, a fee of up to €250 will be incurred (covered by the deposit already paid) – this is to cover lost administrative costs.

We ask that you be as specific as possible in your initial internship description, so that we are able to immediately search for exactly the position that best matches your preferences and needs. Please also be aware that the positions we are able to offer you will be dependent on your level of English and previous work experience. We can also assist you with applying for a visa.

Transport

  • Arrival airports: Auckland or Christchurch
  • An optional (payable) transfer can be arranged between these airports and your accommodation

If you wish, we can arrange your transport for you. Please make this clear when you enrol.

If you intend to book your own flights, try to arrive the Sunday before the start of your internship and leave the Saturday after its end.

Visa Information

To enter New Zealand territory, you will need a student visa, because an internship is not considered a job.

This visa will cost around 300 NZ$.

We will provide you with all the necessary documents to acquire one.
