Destination

Cambodia is located in the heart mainland of Southeast Asia, which conjures images of a glorious and mysterious past and rich of the cultural heritages, particularly the world’s renowned ancient temple city Angkor Wat, whose magical image draws ever-increasingly tourists from all over the world.

Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Once known as the “Pearl of Asia”, it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina in the 1920s. The city is noted for its beautiful and historical architecture and attractions. A mixture of Cambodian hospitality, Asian exotica and Indochinese charm await the visitor to Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh is a city of more than 2 million people and the country’s commercial, economic and political hub. It is also comparatively new travel destination.

An adventure destination just a decade ago, the city is now a centre of diverse economic and urban development and is quickly morphing an air of edgy chic with bistros and boutique hotels lining the riverfront, smart little silk boutiques and galleries dotting the side streets, a budding arts scene and a heady dusk-to-dawn nightlife.

School

The School was founded in 1993. From 1993 to the present day, students of all ages from more than 30 nationalities have studied with us. Students study from one to four hours per day over a period ranging from one week to two years.

Our partner school’s mission is to provide a centre of language and cultural enrichment for expatriates and nationals, as well as a place of training and employment opportunities for nationals.

The objectives are to facilitate expatriates in the study of the Khmer Language, to raise awareness of Cambodian culture among expatriates and to provide work for Cambodians by training them to teach Khmer to expatriates.

Our experienced, friendly and patient teachers will adapt to your chosen pace and style of learning, helping you to speak and understand Khmer and, if you wish, to read and write as well. Our staff, all Cambodians, is well attuned to the needs of expatriates, and at the same time as teaching you the Khmer language they will also give you insights into their country’s customs and culture.

Courses

Language Courses

The School specializes in teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing Khmer to expatriates. Language relevant to special subjects such as agriculture, business, the Bible or health are also taught if requested. We offer one-to-one classes.

This course take place from Monday to Friday, 2 or 3 hours per day (10 or 15 hours per week of one-to-one classes).

Note: for students whose first language is not English, we have teachers who are proficient in French, Thai and Vietnamese.

Volunteer Work

We also offer a volunteering programme within a small local NGO for those who wish to make a difference and help people in Cambodia.

The volunteering programme is offered for durations of 1 to 2 months and can be combined with khmer language classes. It is open to students from 18 to 22 who want to experience something different. Other profiles and ages are possible, for instance (retired) professionals looking for something different, or willing to contribute with their managerial skills to Cambodia’s development.

The association

The association has been created to help street children who are unable to feed themselves, either because their families do not have the means to or because they no longer have a family. Their primary objective is to distribute one meal per day to starving, begging, or scavenger children.

But this organisation provides more than just food to these children: it gives them the opportunity to wash, to learn about moral, civic, and sanitary education. It helps them with the application processes for re-entering the scholastic system.

Since its establishment, the LRDE has given street children more than 56,800 meals. The association welcomes 140-180 children every day, mainly boys. Each child's meal costs around 80 cents. Babies are given milk. The bigger the meal, the more balanced they are made.

Your role within the NGO

The possible roles available to you are varied and revolve generally around working with underprivileged children, in a welcome centre near the school. You can for example teach them basic English, or basic IT skills, or even help out with distributing meals.

A longer volunteer programme (up to a year) is available for students with a secondary or university qualification, for an administrative or pedagogical role. A good level of English is required. Your local contact speaks both French and English.

Accommodation

Hotel

You will be accommodated in a hotel close by the school. You will stay in a single room with bathroom and breakfast included.

Free internet available in the convenience store next door (Wi-Fi). Hot meals can be found everywhere for about 2 to 5$. .

During your stay (one month minimum), you will be offered to take part in a 2 days trip to surrounding villages with Cambodian homestay accommodation. It is a fantastic option if you want to immerse yourself into the local culture. You will have the chance to experience a week-end of local living in a well appointed local home and to see how life goes on in local villages.
