Discover Salamanca

Salamanca, known as the Golden City, is home to the fifth oldest university in the world and some important historical monuments. There is a large student population and the city is known for its lively, festive atmosphere. Salamanca is the perfect place to discover the real student life and meet Spanish students of the same age.

It is a small city of 180,000 inhabitants in western Spain, about 200km from Madrid. In an environment full of history there is a very active cultural life and animated night life. The monuments and the university are witness to the historic importance of the city, considered to be the site of the Spanish renaissance. Many famous people have left their trace behind, from Luis de León to Miguel de Unamuno.

Students can take advantage of the Plaza Mayor, one of Spain's most impressive public spaces, and the birthplace of Castillan. For all of these reasons it is not surprising that it was nominated at the European Capital of culture in 2002, together with Bruges. Salamanca contributes largely to the festive reputation of the Iberian Peninsular.

Enforex, our partner language school in Salamanca, is located in a former 17th century monastery just a 5-minute walk from Plaza Mayor. Founded in 1973, the school aims to promote the Spanish language and culture through quality and effective programs. Enforex is recognized by the Instituto Cervantes and other accrediting bodies.

With students from more than 30 different countries, the school has a vibrant, international atmosphere. The school also assures students optimal working conditions, including a computer lab, WiFi, study hall, garden, sports fields and 30 classrooms (up to 60 in summer).

Activities and Excursions

The school regularly organizes social and cultural activities. They include:

Afternoons: Visits to the city (the cathedral, la Plaza Mayor, Casa de las Conchas, l’university, etc.), cinema, football or basketball games, tapas. Weekend: Excursions to Toledo, Ávila, Madrid, Zamora and Vallado, Ciudad Rodrigo.

The school is open to participants ages 16 and up of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Class sizes are small, generally with an average of 8 students (10 maximum). Classes are each 55 minutes long.

Courses begin every Monday, and students sit a written placement test on the first day of class. Our programs combine different teaching techniques, centred on a communicative approach in order to reach every kind of learner.

We offer several courses:

  • Standard or Intensive Programme

    • Standard: 20 Spanish lessons per week.
    • Intensive: 25 Spanish lessons + 5 cultural workshops.
  • DELE Exam Preparation

The DELE (Diploma for Spanish as a Foreign Language) is the only official certificate for foreign students recognized by the Instituto Cervantes. This certificate is an invaluable asset for students who wish to study at a Spanish university or who would like to work in a Spanish-speaking country. This 20-lesson per week course is designed to prepare you to pass the DELE exam at any of its 3 levels.

  • Private Lessons

Group programme + 5 or 10 private lessons per week. Students benefit from one-on-one teaching and a personalized lesson plan. The fastest and most efficient way to improve rapidly.

Cultural Workshops

A strong understanding of Spanish culture is essential to communication in the language. Our afternoon cultural workshops are not only intended to serve as opportunities for students to practice their Spanish, but also as ways to learn the basics of Spanish history, art, and mass communication.

  • Spanish Radio: Students produce their own radio program based on national and international newscasts. The class requires students to listen to, collect and summarize information from Spanish broadcast media.
  • Press Workshop: Students produce their own newspaper/magazine based on news, cultural events, and popular traditions. The class requires students to conduct research in Spanish print media as well as to interview locals.
  • Drama Workshop: Students learn and perform extracts from well-known Spanish plays. In addition to the obvious cultural education that this workshop provides, it also aids students in learning to express themselves quickly with idiomatic terms.
  • History, Literature, & Art: Students learn to analyze some of Spain’s most famous writers and artists who reflect Spanish history. Students will also discover Spanish customs, gastronomy, and popular events.

Students have the choice of a homestay, student residence or shared apartment.

Accommodation is available from Sunday before courses start to Saturday following the end of courses.

  • Homestay

Staying with a host family is the best way to fully delve into the Spanish language and culture. We take enormous care in selecting the best host family for the student and all of our families are carefully screened. Students are encouraged to spend time with their families in order to make the most out of their stay in the country. It is possible that you will take part in their daily lives, from going shopping to visiting friends on the weekends.

Students share a double room (single rooms available at an extra charge), and our host families provide bedding, towels, WiFi, and half board. Normally homestays are around 30 minutes from Enforex on foot or by public transport.

  • Student Residence

Student residences offer dormitory-style living for students who would like to have a more independent lifestyle. Students who choose this option have the opportunity to live side-by-side with Spanish people (during the year) or people from all over the world (during the summer)!

The residence hall is located in the center of town and is about 20 - 30 minutes on foot from the Enforex. Single or double rooms as well as a choice of half or full board are available. There is a private bathroom option, otherwise toilets and showers are shared. Bedding and a cleaning service for common areas is provided. There is a deposit of 150€ payable by cash or credit required upon arrival.

  • Shared Apartment

This option also allows students to live with international students in a friendly atmosphere. Apartments are entirely furnished and equipped: students can cook their own meals in the kitchen, complete with a microwave, pots and pans, utensils, etc.

Apartments are made up of 3 to 6 rooms (singles, doubles, and triples) and include all comforts needed to ensure a pleasant stay: fully-equipped kitchen, TV, washing machine, bathroom etc. Bedding is provided and amenities (water, heat, electricity) are included. It is possible to request a private bathroom at an extra charge.

A deposit of 150€ is required (cash or credit card) to obtain the keys. Apartments are located in close proximity to shops and restaurants.
