The American Summer Camp programmes are aimed at young people all over the world who want to improve their English and participate in sports and cultural activities in a safe and welcoming environment.
This programme enables youth, ages 13-18, to improve their English and discover American culture in one of the most fascinating state of the country, Florida. This experience will allow you to immerse yourself in the ambiance of a great American city, while benefiting fully from the secure and comfortable setting of a university campus, and to learn English, in both a classroom setting as well as through daily practice. The programme is open to all levels of English, from beginner to advanced.
Destination
Florida is known as the "Sunshine State" thanks to its 310 days of sunshine per year and 900 miles of beautiful palm lined beaches. The state offers a variety of natural attractions, such as a long chain of islands off the southern coast, over 30,000 lakes and the Everglades National Park. This park preserves the natural habitat for thousands of tropical plants and animals and is still home to Indian tribes.
Fort Lauderdale, the “Venice of America”, is a wealthy, safe and exclusive resort city. It is a dynamic financial centre and is considered the “yachting capital of America”. There are 40 km of sandy beaches, an average temperature of 25 Degrees and warm waters. Fort Lauderdale is an attractive residential area and offers countless free-time activities. Blessed with over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and pleasant year-round ocean breezes, world-famous Fort Lauderdale Beach offers premier opportunities for recreation, relaxation and enjoyment.
Description
The University is the nation’s seventh largest, not-for-profit, independent university with more than 28,000 students and 103,000 alumni. It operates three campuses in Southern Florida, and has a presence in nine countries around the world. State-of-the-art facilities with outdoor swimming pool, basketball courts, and softball fields. Indoor gymnasium with racquetball courts, indoor climbing wall.
Courses
Students attend 20 lessons of English on a weekly basis. The programme can last 2, 3 or 4 weeks. There are three class levels – beginning, intermediate and advanced. Classes meet from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm., Monday through Friday. Classes average 12 students, but have a maximum of 15 students. The first weekday of the students’ programme, each will be given an English language placement test to assess proficiency level.
The course is a conversation course which emphasizes speaking and listening skills. Classes will provide opportunities for students to practice and as well as to meet and communicate with students from other countries. The focus is to strengthen and build speaking skills. Classes are student-centreed, alive, full of energy, and use varied group and pair-work activities. Students will be expected to fully participate and to speak in English.
Activities
Sudents will enjoy three half-day excursions and one full-day excursion per week. The excursions are in Fort Lauderdale or the surrounding area: Kennedy Space Centre (3 or 4 week programme), Walt Disney (4 week programme), Coconut Grove water park, beach, bowling, basketball, climbing, Miami sightseeing, museum, etc.
On location, other excursions can be arranged: Miami Metro Zoo, Key West, Miami Seaquarium, Universal Studios, etc.
Accommodation
Residence
Our Residence Hall is a 5 story suite-style residence. It currently houses up to 320 students. Each dorm room has two single beds and a private bathroom, air conditioning. Small lounges are located on every floor. A main lounge, classroom, laundry room and a kitchen are located on the lobby floor. Telephones are provided in the dorm room. Bedrooms are not cleaned during the students’ stay. However, common areas such as lounges and hallways are cleaned daily. All meals are taken in the University Centre. Full board is provided on the weekdays, half-board on weekends.
